Electrolysis 101: The Basics You Need to Know

At ShoYo Face Electrolysis

We’re committed to helping you understand everything about electrolysis—from how it works to why it’s the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal. Whether you're dealing with hormonal hair growth, genetics, or simply seeking a permanent solution, we’re here to guide you through the process.

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal treatment that uses a tiny, sterilized probe to deliver a mild electrical current to the hair follicle. This current destroys the follicle’s ability to grow hair permanently, making electrolysis effective for all hair colors, hair types, and skin tones. It's the most versatile and trusted method for achieving lasting smooth skin.

Why Electrolysis?

As the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, electrolysis is a safe, reliable solution for those looking for long-term results. Unlike methods like laser hair removal, which is not effective on light hair or darker skin tones, electrolysis works for everyone. Whether you're looking to remove facial hair, underarm hair, or other areas, electrolysis provides consistent and permanent results.

The History of Electrolysis

Electrolysis has been around for 150 years, first introduced in 1875 by Dr. Charles Michel, an ophthalmologist who used it to treat ingrown eyelashes. Over the years, it has evolved into the safest, most effective method for permanent hair removal. Today, electrolysis remains the gold standard trusted by both professionals and clients.

How Does Electrolysis Work?

There are three primary methods (modalities) used in electrolysis, each designed for different hair types and client needs:

  • Galvanic Electrolysis: Uses a direct current to create a chemical reaction in the hair follicle, which destroys the hair follicle.

  • Thermolysis: Uses a high-frequency alternating current to generate heat, which destroys the area of the hair follicle, cutting off the blood supply and nutrients from the source.

  • Blend Method: Combines both galvanic and thermolysis methods, offering the benefits of both currents for effective results across various hair types.

Each method is customized to ensure the best results for you, providing safe, permanent hair removal.

What to Expect During Your Session

When you come in for your electrolysis treatment, here’s what you can expect:

  • Consultation: We’ll start with a consultation to discuss your goals, hair type, and the best treatment method for your needs.

  • Treatment: During the session, a tiny, sterilized probe is gently inserted into each hair follicle. The electrical current is then applied to destroy the follicle’s ability to produce hair.

  • Sensation: Most clients report a mild, brief sensation during treatment, often described as slight pinching or tingling. It's well-tolerated by most clients.

Length of Session: Sessions vary from 15 minutes to 120 minutes depending on the area being treated.

Preparing for Your Electrolysis Session

To ensure the best results and a comfortable experience, please follow these preparation guidelines before your appointment:

Avoid Hair Removal Methods:

  • Plucking or Waxing: Refrain from these methods for 2-3 weeks prior to your appointment.

Shaving:

  • Avoid shaving the area for 3-5 days before your session.

Clean the Skin:

  • Arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotions, creams, or oils.

Moisturize:

  • Keep the skin moisturized leading up to your appointment.

Exfoliate:

  • Gently exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells, promoting better results.

Stay Hydrated:

  • Drink plenty of water before your session to keep your skin hydrated

Avoid Caffeine and Excessive Sugar:

  • Steer clear of caffeine and high sugar intake on the day of your appointment, as these can increase sensitivity.

Avoid Drying Products:

  • Do not use drying ingredients or products such as glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, retinol, Retin-A, salicylic acid, or any peels in the days leading up to your session.

Aftercare Instructions

After your treatment, we’ll provide personalized aftercare instructions. Here are some general tips to ensure the best healing and long-term results:

  • Avoid Touching: Do not touch or pick at the treated area to prevent infection.

  • Clean the Area: Gently clean the treated area with mild cleanser and water.

  • Use gentle healing ingredient products like the following:

Aloe vera gel has soothing, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating properties, making it excellent for calming redness, reducing irritation, and promoting skin healing after treatment.

Ice cubes help constrict blood vessels, reduce swelling, and numb the area, providing immediate relief from redness and discomfort following electrolysis.

Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it excellent for preventing breakouts, reducing redness, and promoting healing after treatment.

Witch hazel is a natural astringent that helps calm inflammation, tighten pores, and reduce redness while also having mild antibacterial properties.

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect the treated area from the sun for 24–48 hours. If you must go outside, wear sunscreen.

  • Avoid Sweating: Refrain from strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for 24 hours after treatment.

  • No Makeup: If your treatment was on the face, avoid applying makeup for 24 hours.

By following these aftercare steps, you’ll help ensure optimal healing and achieve the best, long-lasting results.
